UMI modules

UMI moduleA UMI product is modular and consists of one Host (power and time master) and 0-15 Peripherals, as shown in the diagram below. The Host contains 1-15 high or low power UMI ports that UMI Peripherals can be plugged into. The Peripherals can be high power (12V WAN modules), low power (3V HAN modules) or self-powered. The Peripheral modules all have the same mechanical form factor and connector as shown in the diagram below. Peripherals can be plugged into the Host directly or via a ribbon cable. Changing from one Peripheral to another does not require any software changes to the Host. A common strategy is to locate the stable functions (e.g metrology or gateway kernel) in the Host and the unstable functions (e.g communications, security, payment methods) in the Peripherals.

The UMI modules can translate messages to the desired protocol (DLMS, ZSE, ANSI) or can tunnel UMI packets through to the external communications link.

UMI modules are available from several organisations for various wireless and wired communications standards, including those listed below. Click on the images to go to their websites.
