Wireless Medical Telemetry
Wireless Medical Telemetry
Terminal and Basestation

Objective

Cambridge Consultants was engaged by Philips Medical Systems to develop the radio subsystem for their next generation IntelliVue™ Telemetry System. This state-of-the-art ambulatory monitor had to operate in the dedicated WMTS medical frequency band with very high link integrity and achieve more than two days operation per battery change.

These technical challenges needed to be met whilst also meeting Philips’ demanding commercial requirements.

Approach

Using our tailored medical product design process, Cambridge Consultants developed hardware and software for the:

  • Radio subsystem for patient worn devices
  • Infrastructure access points linking wireless and wired parts

To reduce development risk and time, we tailored our DECT IP by modifying the frequency band to the WMTS band, used digital signal processing (DSP) to alter the spectral mask to handle heavy traffic density, and modified the frame structure to increase user density.

To achieve the challenging ultra-power consumption requirements we also employed advanced power management techniques.

Result

Use of the DECT IP dramatically cut the costs of developing and implementing the final system. The system achieved the required  bi-directional data rate of 12kbit/s for cell sizes of around 35 ft. Over a 1000 users are capable of being supported on the system simultaneously. Cambridge Consultants supported Philips Medical successfully through the regulatory cycle.

Benefit

Philips Medical Systems exploited the benefit of using our proven DECT IP to reduce development risk, time and cost, to ensure that they were early to market with a highly competitive product.
