United States Navy signs target scoring deal with Cambridge Consultants for novel deployment of holographic radar technology

Innovative radar technology will be deployed to improve accuracy of surface target scoring systems, enhancing defense test and evaluation capabilities on land and sea ranges

Cambridge Consultants, a leading technology product design and development firm, announced today the inclusion of its holographic radar technology in a US Department of Defense (DoD) demonstration program geared at improving the projectile scoring capabilities of the US Navy and Army.  This demonstration project, funded by the Department for Operational Test & Evaluation (DOT&E) for both services, will align holographic radar technology and target scoring technology applications for the first time.

Cambridge Consultants’ proprietary holographic radar technology provides a new approach that can greatly enhance the performance of target scoring systems, enabling the accurate measurement of the trajectory of a test target or projectile as it approaches its target, with a range of up to 1,000 feet (305m).  It can uniquely deal with test scenarios which are highly cluttered, such as on land and marine target vehicles, where a conventional radar would be swamped with unwanted signals.  The holographic radar can detect and track small objects of interest in the presence of large clutter signals without degradation in sensitivity.

Cambridge Consultants has agreed to provide monitoring and support for the US Navy during the demonstration program.  The company, which has offices in both Cambridge, UK and Cambridge, Massachusetts, provides a complete target scoring service, from system definition, installation design and qualification, through to training and in-service support.  System definition and qualification includes installation design for the target vehicle and test range, then qualification testing on the ground and test flights to verify in-flight performance and telemetry coverage.

“We are honored to assist the US Navy in developing new, potentially groundbreaking applications for this exciting technology,” said Gary Kemp, Programme Director at Cambridge Consultants.  “Drawing on Cambridge Consultants’ philosophy of interdisciplinary collaboration, we are able to bring in a diverse range of experts to engineer a complete solution through the R&D process.  Moreover, we look forward to building upon our relationship with US government agencies as we anticipate further opportunities and market growth within this critical sector.”

Holographic radar is a non-scanning, continuously tracking 3-D radar that provides continuous illumination of its field of view and can resolve and measure an object’s motion at fine scale, as well as its range and direction.  It has been engineered to enhance automotive radar capabilities and most recently in the UK has been scaled up for infill coverage for air traffic control, offering a solution to a current radar technology gap by enabling radar systems to differentiate moving aircraft from rotating wind turbines.

Further showing the momentum for its government related business lines, Cambridge Consultants also announced the appointment of Wayne Booker to lead the development of the company’s work with US Government Systems.  Booker has played a critical role in the company’s growth in the United States.  A former naval aviator with prior government business experience at GE and Rockwell, Booker joined the company as Head of Business Development in 2004, overseeing the relocation of the company’s US headquarters to the technology hub of Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA.  In addition to leading US marketing and sales efforts, he has carried overall project responsibility for a number of programs in drug development, consumer products, patient monitoring, critical care and coronary disease.
