Advanced
Breast Cancer Imaging Technology
Takes Step Closer to Market
Cambridge
Consultants Ltd. and TeraView
Ltd. are working together with
leading international surgeons
to establish the best market
entry strategy for TeraViews
advanced imaging technology
for breast cancer. TeraView
is currently conducting a series
of studies with Addenbrookes
Hospital, Cambridge, imaging
healthy and cancerous tissues.
By utilising TeraViews
technology, significant healthcare
savings could be made world-wide
by reducing the need for repeat
surgery.
TeraView
is the worlds first company
devoted solely to the exploitation
of Terahertz radiation, which
lies between microwave and infra
red and represents the last
unexplored region of the electromagnetic
spectrum. Terahertz radiation
is able to image in 3D, provide
spectroscopic information and
can distinguish between diseased
and normal tissue. The potential
benefits of the system include
improved detection rates of
unhealthy tissue during surgery,
leading to a decrease in repeat
surgery and morbidity.
"Our technology development
is at a critical stage, and
by performing this research
study with Cambridge Consultants,
a company with both the technical
and commercial knowledge to
understand the technology, we
hope to see TeraView technology
introduced into operating theatres
within the next three years,"
comments Dr Don Arnone, CEO
of TeraView.
Dr. Gerald Dunstan, Senior Business
Consultant at Cambridge Consultants
continues, "Lessening the
need for a second procedure
by using Terahertz imaging technology
in the initial surgery will
not only provide considerable
health economic benefits, but
may also provide improved recovery
rates and a reduction in the
trauma of treatment for the
patient at an already trying
time. By engaging with surgeons,
we can develop, analyse and
recommend a number of strategies
to TeraView in order to help
them achieve successful market
entry for this exciting technology."
This
technology has other applications,
including security screening
to detect weapons and non-metallic
items hidden beneath clothing,
which are not ordinarily picked
up with conventional X-rays.
Dr. Simon Shohet, Group Leader
of Cambridge Consultants
Business Consulting Unit concluded,
"Its a great opportunity
to work with TeraView on such
an exciting technology. This
type of project enables us to
use our unique mix of strategic,
commercial and technical consulting
knowledge. We are always focused
on delivering value for all
our clients globally but it
is very nice to be able to do
this, in this instance, for
our neighbour on the renowned
Cambridge Science Park."
