Cambridge Consultants brings its Vena platform to the
Continua Health Alliance
- Focus on Vena as Continua Alliance members seek to develop standards for personal health device interoperability
Cambridge Consultants has joined the Continua Health Alliance, a consortium of healthcare and technology companies collaborating to establish an eco-system of interoperable personal health systems that will empower people and organisations to better manage health and wellness.
As a member of Continua, Cambridge Consultants offers its Vena platform, a low cost single chip communication solution for health devices, with the capability to deliver both wired (USB) and wireless (Bluetooth®) connectivity to health devices.
“Device interoperability is a key focus for the Alliance,” explains David Whitlinger, President and Chair of Continua Alliance’s Board of Directors. “If we are to address the significant problems for healthcare provision around the world, we need to deliver technology that enables people to manage their own healthcare. Cambridge Consultants’ Vena platform is a positive step in delivering that vision.”
The Vena platform offers a breakthrough software solution on a single chip that allows medical devices to communicate. Vena includes the three standards required for the Version One Device Connectivity Standards selected by the Continua Health Alliance. It embeds the Bluetooth Health Device Profile and the USB Personal Health Device standard, optimised for the secure transport of medical data, onto a single chip at an affordable price. Vena also offers the IEEE11073 standards for compatible exchange of information between health devices including thermometers, weighing scales and blood glucose meters.
Paul Williamson, Head of Wireless Medical at Cambridge Consultants, said: “The Continua Health Alliance is a leap forward for the industry. By ensuring interoperability, we can give individuals, patients and healthcare professionals access to health and fitness information through devices and services that have been designed to a common standard, and which offer personalised solutions.”
“Vena provides the capability to rapidly develop ‘Continua CertifiedTM’ devices,” concludes Williamson, “and we are now engaging with medical device companies from within Continua with the aim of making compatible personal health and fitness devices a reality.”

IEEE 11073 Personal Health Data is a framework of standards that addresses transport-independent application and information profiles between personal telehealth devices and monitors / managers (e.g. health appliance, set top box, mobile phone, personal computer). Device profiles include pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, weighing scale, and thermometer.
The Bluetooth word mark and logo are registered trademarks and are owned by the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. A Bluetooth profile defines how different applications use Bluetooth wireless technology to set up a connection and exchange data. The Medical Devices Working Group of the Bluetooth SIG developed the Bluetooth medical device protocol to ensure that devices in the medical environment can transfer data between devices in a secure and well defined way via Bluetooth wireless technology.
Associated images: The release contains an image of the Vena platform applied to a consumer wrist worn blood pressure monitor - the device would be easy to slip on periodically during the week and then would wirelessly transfer recorded data back to the central monitor. The Vena platform will allow a range of more consumer focused medical device designs.
