DPI DIY

With the pipeline for the dry powder inhaler (DPI) market flooded with poorly designed products, Cambridge Consultants, a leading European technology design and development company, has issued a free requirements specification to help companies avoid the pitfalls into which so many fall.

According to Cambridge Consultants (CCL), too many companies fail to produce the dry powder inhaler they set out to create simply because they don't follow some essential and guiding principles.

The result is that many designs either never reach the market, or fail to gain regulatory approval without the need for substantial redesign. This failure leads to development projects running behind schedule and significantly over budget. Charles Tavner, head of CCL's drug delivery group commented, "The current DPI pipeline is swamped with products which simply won't meet future regulatory standards and poorly meet the users needs."

It was this observation which led CCL to develop the generic requirements specification, designed for use by anyone developing a DPI. The template represents the culmination of research into future regulatory requirements coupled with significant experience of drug delivery development. Tavner continued, "It is through years of experience that CCL has learned the most efficient and effective ways of meeting all the demands in what often end up as very large development projects. They are by their very nature complex and the issues non-trivial. The purpose of this template is to allow development managers to appropriately consider all the relevant steps at the outset of the project to reduce the risk of being caught out downstream by either regulatory, marketing, or end-user requirements."
