Mechanical Engineer

Main purpose of the job

To work within multi-disciplinary teams on major development projects, applying your mechanical engineering abilities to create innovative designs and implement sophisticated technologies into new products.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

We combine highly creative, lateral thinking with excellent technical skills, and a broad base of industry experience, to form a powerful development team. Our work includes undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, and consulting with our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

The Electromechanical Products Group specialises in the design and development of complex products serving a range of industry sectors including:

  • High volume consumer products
  • Scientific instruments
  • Mechatronics
  • Healthcare products
  • Automotive & industrial drives
  • Power conversion
  • Control algorithm development and embedded control systems
  • Industrial systems

The main areas of expertise within this multidisciplinary group are electromechanical systems design, analogue & digital electronics, numerical analysis & mechanical engineering, motor & drive technologies, power electronics, industrial design and management of new product introductions.

Specific responsibilities

Initially, this position involves taking roles within development projects, with exposure to all aspects of development from contract negotiation to final delivery. You will be using your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects, this will include:

  • Concept generation
  • Analysis and development of system architectures
  • Detailed design of mechanical and electromechanical systems, down to component level

Working closely with other engineers and technicians to implement detailed design solutions for:

  • Theoretical designs
  • Proof-of-concept prototypes
  • Production intent, for high-volume manufacture.
  • Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry, and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial and time restraints. In addition, there are opportunities for this role to develop rapidly into management of projects, including having full responsibility for delivery to our clients.

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have:

  • An excellent first degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • A genuine passion for product design, mechanics, and engineering in general
  • Some post graduate relevant industrial experience
  • A creative approach to problem solving and concept generation
  • An appreciation of the use of engineering analysis in product development
  • Hands-on experience of 3D CAD tools, preferably Pro-Engineer and / or SolidWorks

In addition, any experience of the following will also be beneficial:

  • A good understanding of CFD and / or FEA
  • An ability to apply Matlab / Simulink as a design and simulation tool
  • Experience of using the dSPACE rapid prototyping environment

Direct experience of product development in the consumer product or automotive industries would be beneficial, including knowledge of high volume manufacturing processes and electromechanical technology. Similarly, a post-graduate qualification with a high level of practical experience would also be advantageous
