Project Manager - Medical Device Development
Main purpose of the job
Your primary role will be taking responsibility for managing and delivering medical technology projects either in the Diagnostics, Drug Delivery or Surgical and Interventional areas.
Type of work undertaken by the division/group
The development of innovative healthcare devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenge. The Medical Technology Division undertakes development projects in the three focus areas of:
- Medical diagnostics and instrumentation
- Surgical products and medical systems
- Drug delivery devices
We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.
Specific responsibilities
You will be taking the lead role in planning, proposal generation, liaison with clients and project management of teams of up to 20 people. You will also use your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects, often working on more than one concurrently, and to participate in consultancy work within client companies.
To achieve this, you will be expected to:
- Produce consistently excellent work, autonomously, in your area of expertise and be sought out for advice in this area by engineers within Cambridge Consultants
- Lead meetings with clients, give presentations and communicate ideas and concepts to all disciplines
- Support the activities of Business Leaders in sales meetings, writing sales presentations, project proposals and planning projects
- Take a role in developing new areas of technical expertise in the company through the recruitment, training and mentoring of engineers
Minimum requirements
To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have an excellent first degree in engineering, the physical sciences or a related discipline – a second degree or PhD would be an advantage. You should also have a good knowledge of the medical device industry and significant experience of product development, preferably within one of the fields listed above. This experience will extend from requirements gathering through to implementation, verification and validation. You will have a track record of delivering technically challenging projects against tight time and budget constraints, working within formal development processes – experience of FDA-regulations and ISO 13485 will be an advantage.
You will have a proven ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians. You will have hands-on experience of engineering complex, multi-disciplinary systems from requirements gathering through to implementation, including verification and validation. You should be proficient in determining compromises between different engineering disciplines at all stages of development. You will also have the ability to communicate technical decisions both within the project team and to clients.
