Project Manager – Clinical Diagnostics Instrumentation Development

Main purpose of the job

Your primary role will be managing and delivering design and development projects in the clinical diagnostics arena.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

We undertake the design and development of innovative clinical diagnostic products and equipment. The projects are typically multidisciplinary in nature and often incorporate considerable technical challenges. The Clinical Diagnostic Product Development Group conducts projects in the areas of:

  • Laboratory instrumentation
  • Point of care devices and instrumentation
  • Consumer diagnostics

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and a broad base of industry experience to form powerful development teams. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to manufacture, to providing consulting services on technology, strategy or development processes.

The Clinical Diagnostics Product Development Group is part of the Medical Technology Division which undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects in the areas of Clinical Diagnostics, Surgical and Interventional Devices and Drug Delivery Devices.

Specific responsibilities

You will take a lead role in planning, proposal generation, liaison with clients and project management of teams of up to 20 people delivering multidisciplinary projects and products. You will also use your strong technical skills to make a significant technical contribution to development projects, often working on more than one concurrently.

To achieve this, you will be expected to:

  • Lead meetings with clients, give presentations and communicate ideas and concepts to all disciplines
  • Lead project teams, motivating and enabling them to succeed in delivering quality outcomes to time and to budget
  • Take the lead in ensuring that projects are run to relevant quality standards including the EU and FDA standards for medical devices and in-vitro diagnostic equipment
  • Produce consistently excellent work, autonomously, in your area of expertise and be sought out for advice in this area by engineers within Cambridge Consultants
  • Support the activities of Business Leaders in sales meetings, writing sales presentations, project proposals and planning projects
  • Take a role in developing new areas of technical expertise in the company through the recruitment, training and mentoring of engineers

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have an excellent first degree in engineering, the physical sciences or a related discipline – a second degree or PhD would be an advantage. You should also have a good knowledge of the medical device industry and significant experience of product development, preferably within one of the fields listed above. This experience will extend from requirements gathering through to implementation, verification and validation. You will have a track record of delivering technically challenging projects against tight time and budget constraints, working within formal development processes – experience of FDA regulations and ISO 13485 will be an advantage.

You will have a proven ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians. You will have hands-on experience of engineering complex, multi-disciplinary systems from requirements gathering through to implementation, including verification and validation. You should be proficient in determining compromises between different engineering disciplines at all stages of development. You will also have the ability to communicate technical decisions both within the project team and to clients.
