Train Data System

The carriages of London Underground's Central Line are heavily instrumented, providing a useful source of data for maintenance and fault finding. Cambridge Consultants has developed a system that is able to collate and analyse the rolling stock data from the circa 120,000 sensors.

The system is integrated using a distributed database, a data warehouse, and both a bespoke client application and a web front end to provide easy access to the data. Key challenges included developing the interface to bespoke hardware responsible for the download from the trains.

As a result of our work, the full data sets are always available to maintenance engineers via the network, allowing pro-active fault identification to be carried out. In turn, these lead to improved efficiency of maintenance and hence higher availability of rolling stock.
