Transport Radar
There is significant interest in technologies
that can be easily deployed to monitor traffic flows and characterise
the vehicles. Cambridge Consultants has developed a version
of its automotive radar
targeted at transport applications where road ‘loops’
are not appropriate.
The radar is able to monitor multiple
lanes from a gantry above the road or a pole at the side of
the road. It is able to measure accurately speed (from 0 kph
up to 120 kph), position of vehicle and height and length
of vehicle. Because of the nature of the radar, the radar's
region of interest can be defined in software, can change
if traffic engineering requires it and allows for a simple
set-up.
Typical applications might include
monitoring traffic flows on motorways or in urban areas, for
detecting pedestrians waiting to cross the road. It can also
be used to trigger vision systems such as might be use for
road-user charging.
