Integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into reusable and disposable insulin pen design with renewable materials

Date | 1 June

Time | 10:30am CEST

Speaker | Charlie Dean, Sustainable design engineer, MedTech, Cambridge Consultants

Session Details

  • Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as per ISO 14040
  • Application of LCA to reusable and disposable insulin pen design
  • Investigation of environmental impact mitigations through introduction of renewable materials

Synopsis

Mitigating environmental burden of drug therapies is of ever increasing importance. While carbon footprint is a top priority, there are over a dozen other impact categories. Understanding how product design and materials affect the environment and what mitigations are available can be challenging. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology that was developed to navigate the complex process of integrating sustainable principles into product development. This presentation aims to demonstrate the use of LCA in exploring how environmental impacts can compare in a cradle-to-gate basis on the following scenarios:

  • Disposable insulin pen (single cartridge use)
  • Reusable insulin pen
  • Disposable insulin pen made with alternative renewable materials
  • Reusable insulin pen made with alternative renewable materials
