Since January 2021 the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has been in place, opening even more opportunities for UK companies to forge partnerships and generate new business in one of the largest economies in the world.

Marking this exciting new chapter in trading relations between the UK and Japan, the Department for International Trade (DIT) and Smart City Institute Japan (SCI-J), the largest smart cities association in Japan, are hosting a webinar, inviting innovative UK technology companies to learn from the Open Data Institute (ODI) in the UK and NEC in Japan to compare the successes and challenges in open data utilisation.

NEC developed an open data utilisation platform called ‘Fiware’ a few years ago and have been exploring the Japanese market with this tool. For the webinar, a speaker from the ODI will talk about case studies and success stories on open data utilisation projects in the UK while a speaker from NEC will talk about their case studies and challenges on the deployment of their tool in the Japanese market. The two parties will then try and identify areas of interest to complement each other, leading to collaborative projects between UK and Japan, specifically on the topic of ‘open data utilisation with data privacy management’.

Following the presentation by ODI and NEC, there will be an exciting discussion and Q&A session inviting specialists from DIT and  Dr. Jiahui Lu from Cambridge Consultants.

Dr. Jiahui Lu is the Strategy and AI Lead for Cambridge Consultants in Asia with 15 years' experience in technology strategy and engineering development. She specialises in helping clients understand the impact of "game-changer" technologies like AI and in developing robust strategies for commercialising technologies in a competitive landscape. She will be bringing her experience in working with the complexities of PESTLE factors for new technologies and her knowledge of Japan's Smart Cities to the conversation.
