Innovating Across the Maternal Care Continuum

Maternal care is one of the largest underserved areas in global healthcare, with the United States having the highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations. Within the United States, 36 percent of U.S. counties have been classified as maternity care deserts, defined as any county without a hospital or birth center offering obstetric care and without any obstetric providers. Racial and ethnic disparities only worsen the situation, with the maternal mortality rate for Black women an astounding 2.6 times higher than their white peers.

Being faced with a public health crisis, the current administration is striving to act on maternal health and the industry is responding, with global investment into maternal care significantly improving. What actions can be taken next?

MassMEDIC and Cambridge Consultants are convening four prominent healthcare experts across industry, clinical practice, and policy to discuss the biggest unmet needs in maternal care, opportunities for innovation, and actions all stakeholders can be taking to improve outcomes for future generations. The panel will discuss the following topics:

  • The current state of maternal care in the US, including inequities, underserved communities, and barriers and facilitators to innovation.

  • Approaches and inventions that extend innovation across the care continuum, highlighting examples of how to break down existing barriers to achieve impact.

  • Actions that our community can take to support maternal health, starting today.

Speakers featured on this panel include:

  • Maureen Halligan, Vice President, Advisory & Innovation Services, Cambridge Consultants

  • Elizabeth Proos, Vice President of Product Development, Daré Bioscience

  • Dr. Huma Farid, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology, Harvard Medical School
