Farming needs to become smarter, to meet global food demand, protect the environment and combat commercial pressures. Advanced sensing technologies and data analytics can make farms more efficient - helping to minimise food shortages, limit environmental damage and improve profitability - but so far solutions have only focused on specific trials and there is a lack of information on wide-scale, real-world applications.

In this report, we review the challenges facing agriculture and analyse the most compelling use cases for sensing and data analytics. We conclude by presenting a business modelling tool to cost the deployment of an advanced sensing network and calculate the operational improvement for a variety of farm types.
