The path to ultra-low power AI at the edge
Date | 5 March 2021
Time | 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM (CET)
Session | 10.5 System-on-Chip: Core Integration & Tools
Speaker | James Peet, Principal Engineer, Digital Systems, Cambridge Consultants
Delivering transformational products and services means taking artificial intelligence (AI) out of the data centre and into the real world.
This talk analyses the benefits and challenges of deploying AI applications on end-point devices. It outlines revolutionary features unlocked by edge AI technologies, as well as pitfalls to avoid during product development.
To illustrate this, James will share learnings from a concept system we developed to improve monitoring of treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in resource-limited countries. Originally a cloud-based application, a deep-learning algorithm was used to identify, count and classify TB cells in images captured by an ordinary smartphone and laboratory microscope.
As an Arm Approved Design Partner, we were given early access to the latest Arm IP where we successfully redeployed the network for low power AI workloads (using the Cortex-M55 and Ethos-U55). This proves that impactful levels of intelligence can be achieved without network connection by a low-cost camera or embedded into the microscope.
