Podium Talk: Designing away from landfill and incineration - circularity in medical devices
Date | 04 May 2023
Time | TBA
Speakers | Henry Blower, Principal Mechanical Engineer and Dan Cowen, Senior Consultant
Outline
Management of medical waste is a significant challenge for the healthcare industry, and this is particularly relevant for inhaled therapies. With the majority of waste still being incinerated or sent to landfill, there is an ever-increasing pressure on the industry to divert waste to more sustainable end-of-life processing options.
We discuss the various end-of-life options, such as recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse and how to choose the appropriate option for a given product. We also discuss what can be done during product design and development to ensure these waste management methods are commercially viable, have minimal burden on the environment and are feasible from both a technical and regulatory perspective. We provide an overview of the tools and techniques required to make the correct design decisions to balance sustainability with other factors that are key to product success.
