At Cambridge Consultants, the latest sensing, imaging, data analysis and state-of-the-art engineering techniques are deployed to deliver targeted individualized treatments and disruptive next-generation diagnostic solutions.

We transform the management of chronic and acute diseases through molecular diagnostics and cutting-edge liquid biopsy techniques.

Individualized treatments

Diagnostics and medicines are becoming more targeted.

Individualized treatments require cost-effective and targeted approaches to preparing and sampling genetic material and the isolation of specific cells of interest.

Our expertise in microfluidics, single-cell analysis and manipulation, along with experience in deep imaging and data analysis experience enable our clients to create patient-specific therapies.

Sample preparation

As more specific and complex diagnostic pathways migrate from research use only (RUO) to in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) or point-of-care (POC) devices, complex lab-based procedures need to be replicated in standalone devices to meet the challenges of decentralized testing.

These systems are varied, but many require understanding of microfluidics and microdroplet manipulation, as well as techniques such as electrowetting, the introduction of shear forces and complex control systems.

Further systems require tight thermal controls, including the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

Liquid biopsy and cancer

The ability to monitor patients’ progress through frequent blood tests promises to revolutionize cancer treatment. Here, a blend of engineering, design and digital health expertise is helping clients lead the way in personalized medicine.

A track record developing complex medical devices gives us the experience to use powerful technologies – such as digital PCR and next-generation sequencing – and to create advanced liquid biopsy diagnostic platforms.

Machine learning and AI

Large amounts of genomic, molecular, cellular, and patient data can be processed to accelerate the identification of new compounds, treatments, biological targets, pathways and clinical trial participants.

We can deploy world-class machine learning capabilities to develop practical systems for image and data analysis and the detection of patterns in voice, sleep and other physiological markers.

Life sciences market analysis

Many companies start with a great life sciences idea then look for funding to develop it. Creating a compelling business case requires a clear understanding of the market need, the limitations of current products and the potential growth of the specific segment.

The strategy consulting team here specializes in primary and secondary market research, technical due diligence for acquisitions and compiling core business case information. Many clients carry out an initial study in order to support further funding rounds.

We can help you at every stage of the technology development lifecycle and take your idea from concept to launch.

How we work

It is complex, so successful life science and diagnostic device development demands a diverse set of skills. We provide the experience and insight necessary to transform your ideas into fully-realized products ready for manufacture.

Engineering, biology and physics disciplines combine to form tight teams that develop and iterate complex solutions. These are tested in wet labs using biologically relevant models.

By complementing our clients’ own expertise and experience, we are better able to manage development risks. This results in increased confidence, reduced timelines and market-ready products.

Life Science Labs

Life science labs

Our suite of restricted Class II laboratories is specifically designed for handling and experimentation of pharmaceuticals, licensed substances, biological hazards and human samples in a controlled and regulated environment. Our instrumentation rooms are equipped with metrology, microscopy and product test equipment for rigorous verification and quality assurance of prototypes and products.

Synthetic biology lab

Synthetic biology labs

Located in our Cambridge head office, our microbiology lab enables us to genetically modify micro-organisms and characterize them. Our facilities are containment level 2 rated for handling pathogenic strains and our in-house libraries allow rapid modular DNA construct design and assembly. We are particularly interested in building organisms that are biological sensors for healthcare and industrial biotech applications.

Microfluidics lab

Microfluidics lab

Our microfluidics lab is equipped to rapidly prototype Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic devices in a clean environment. We optically inspect functioning test cartridges with state-of-the-art microscopy, and measure particle size distributions with a Spraytec laser diffraction system.

Optics labs

Optics labs

Our suite optics of labs enables us to build complex and high-precision optical layouts, typically for testing prototype designs and novel techniques prior to deployment. Featuring six high-spec optical benches with configurable interlocked controlled areas for high-power (class 4) laser work and specialist facilities for interferometry, spectroscopy, low-noise fluorescence imaging and photon counting. This space can be split into separate laser-controlled areas, allowing multiple experiments to run simultaneously, giving our optical engineers the capability to develop creative solutions without instrumentation restrictions.

We can help you achieve the seemingly impossible

Exploring the potential for non-contact monitoring for sepsis, the quick and costly killer

Jan 17, 2020

Sepsis is a life-threatening response of the immune system to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and the risk of permanent disability or death. Detecting and treating it early can be highly effective in stopping progression. The trouble is that implementing the level of monitoring required to catch sepsis at the earliest stages is tough outside critical care settings.
