The connected ecosystem
The world has never been more connected – and the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution has only just begun.
Each market category places its own specific technological demands on the connectivity solution. With technology advancing at a blistering pace and strong desire for differentiation, off-the-shelf solutions are rarely fit for purpose.
Having played a pivotal role in the creation and development of several major wireless technologies, we have an intimate understanding of the complex trade-offs necessary to create breakthrough connected devices and – crucially – the systems that support them.
Experience

A legacy of leadership
Over many decades, we’ve delivered a steady stream of disruptive breakthroughs, from RF and satellite telecommunications to the world’s first wireless pacemaker and the ground-to-air radio system controlling over 50% of the world’s air traffic.
For evidence of our lasting impact, look no further than our billion-dollar spin-out company Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR), the market leader in Bluetooth technology founded on the success of our ground-breaking development of the world’s first single-chip Bluetooth radio.

Multidisciplinary
We have the world’s largest independent wireless development team, spanning radio frequency, communications protocol, digital signal processing, power-optimised analogue and digital electronic design, embedded software, user experience and mechanical design.
With this unparalleled breadth of skills, we are able to deploy the precise set of disciplines that are critical for each development.
The world’s first fully digital radio
Having designed a series of best-in-class short-range wireless products, we created Pizzicato.
With decades of experience in software defined radio, we’ve recently eliminated all analogue processing from the silicon radio to dramatically reduce size, cost and power consumption. This breakthrough is enabling the creation of an entirely new class of IoT devices.
The world’s first battery-less connected injector
We’ve been building ultra-low-power connected devices since the market first emerged, from high-resolution activity monitors that run for weeks to low-power algorithms providing real-time feedback for sports professionals.
Our low-power obsession led us to develop the award-winning KiCoPen – powered entirely by energy harvested from the motion of removing and replacing the cap.

Tech, tools & facilities

Anechoic test chamber
Our custom anechoic radio and antenna test chamber is a highly sophisticated 5m cube. Inside, we carry out automated three-dimensional measurement and visualization of wireless device behavior and test body-worn technology using body phantoms or real live test subjects. This helps us to understand and optimize real-word RF performance of products such as smart implants (including implanted telemetry), connected drug delivery devices and wearables.

Appcessory toolkit
This lightning-fast scoping and feasibility software platform allows us to very quickly model a connected device, saving time, preventing costly missteps and ensuring optimal performance. Taking key requirements as a starting point, we can estimate the dimensions and cost of the PCB and rapidly see how a range of design decisions influence the complex trade-off between factors such as size, power, battery life, radio range and more.

EMC test chamber
Our fully-shielded ETS-Lindgren anechoic test chamber is suitable for a wide range of EMC and RF testing, which is essential for new devices. It allows us to test for unwanted radiation and susceptibility to interference at an early stage with the results fed directly into product design, rather than later on when changes will be expensive to implement.

Rapid software development tools
We employ a range of rapid software development tools specifically designed for fast connected product development. Specific tools include FSMGen and Datascript.

Sending drones beyond the far horizon
Our breakthrough communication system for Flylogix solves a fundamental challenge for global drone services. Point-to-point radio-based control systems have so far been unable to safely control uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) beyond visual line of site (BVLOS) from a central control centre. But this changes everything.

Sycada DriveTag
This is the story of digital services innovation that is disrupting traditional markets while helping companies make their product offerings more sustainable, cost efficient and safe. At the heart of the story is a low-cost asset-monitoring sensing tag that is small, light and powerful enough be stuck just about anywhere. This core technology concept, now called DriveTag, is helping our client Sycada with its mission to prove that sustainability can go hand in hand with healthy ROI.

RIC and roll: how to unlock the true value of O-RAN
This whitepaper explores the critical role that the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) plays in transforming the network and empowering operators to create and monetise distinctive service propositions. In other words, it’s the RIC that can unlock the true value of the “open” proposition of Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).
