Self-organised autonomous drones could help scale operations

by Stewart Marsh | May 2, 2023 | Aerospace

I had the honour of taking a crack team of CC innovators to Amsterdam Drone Week (ADW) for the first time. Drone innovation – especially autonomous drone navigation with deep learning – was high on the agenda. ADW is a global platform for sharing knowledge on current air solutions, potential innovations and vital regulations. Our team comprised specialists in uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) service design and business modelling, as well as technical aspects such as wireless communications, radar, semiconductors and cloud deployment.

We were on hand to talk through the issues and help guide the way towards safe, regulatory robust, automated beyond-line-of-sight operations – all within the constraints of size, weight and power of AI controlled drones. A notable topic we were keen to explore in the innovation of drones was the commercial opportunities for UAVs. Together with my fellow panellists we discussed ‘Are multiple self-organised drones the answer to scaling the future of commercial operations?’

Panellists include:

  • Lori DeMatteis Chief Revenue Officer, Matrix space
  • Chris Forester, COO Altitude Angel
  • Eszter Kovacs, CEO & co-founder of DroneTalks Group
  • Amanda Boekholt, Deputy Head of Section of, Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication DETEC

Collaborative autonomous drone fleets

My colleague Martin Cookson, Director of Digital Service Innovation also discussed the opportunities for the drone industry and provides an overview of the demonstration he gave at Amsterdam Drone Week ‘ AI-powered fleet of collaborative autonomous drones. This technology breakthrough is an enabler for next-level UAS operations and achieving Level 5 autonomy (the highest possible) with beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) capability.
